A double dose of emerging market goodness

Date: 01th Sep 2022 | Publication: Ausbiz

With soaring interest rates, a supercharged US dollar and pandemic to navigate, it’s not surprising the emerging market universe has been neglected by investors. But given the level of pessimism that exists towards these markets, the inner contrarian in Scutty thinks that means now is the time to start looking for opportunities. So to do just that, he had not one but two emerging markets experts on the show to discuss what’s hot and what’s not. John Moorehead from Maple-Brown Abbott gives his views on the Chinese property sector, a perpetual concern for investors globally in recent years given the implications for so many other regions and sectors. John remains cautious but thinks the worst has probably passed. He gives some ideas on what investors should be looking at along with why he likes parts of the Latin American universe given central banks there began tightening policy far sooner than developed market central banks. Muguthan Siva from India Avenue Investment Management also joined the show to discuss India’s growth trajectory, the traits you should be looking for within Indian financial stocks. He says Bajaj Financial is one such name, pointing to its share price performance which has 64-bagged over the past decade. Mugunthan explains the factors that have driven such a phenomenal performance.
