Ashok Leyland Ltd. is an Indian automobile company. It is the 2nd largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in India and it is also the 4th largest manufacturer of buses and the 10th largest manufacturer of trucks in the world. The company has a footprint in over 50 countries. It has a product range from 2.5T Gross Vehicle Weight to 49T Gross Trailer Weight in trucks, 16 to 80 seater buses, vehicles for defense and special applications and diesel engines for industrial, genset and marine applications. Ashok Leyland launched India’s first electric bus and Euro 6 compliant truck in 2016.
The company has 9 manufacturing plants – out of which 7 are in India, a bus manufacturing facility in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE) and one in Leeds, United Kingdom. It also has a joint venture with the Alteams Group for the manufacture of high-press die-casting extruded aluminum components for the automotive and telecommunication sectors. Thus, Ashok Leyland has a well-diversified portfolio across the automobile industry.
The Indian automobile industry became the 4th largest in the world in 2017 with 9.5% year-on-year increase in sales to 4.02 million units. It also became the 7th largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. Automobile exports grew 15.54% from April 2018 to February 2019. The growing middle class and young population as well as exploring rural markets is supporting the growth of the industry.
The automobile industry is expected to reach US$ 251.4 bn – US$ 282.8 bn by 2026. The industry has attracted Foreign Direct Investment of US$ 20.85 bn from 2000 to 2018.
